The Hamilton Halton Junior Golf Tour and it's Board of Directors wish to congratulate Tour Alumni Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas (ON) on winning the RSM Classic for his first PGA Tour Title...
Hughes got the victory in a 5 man playoff over Henrik Norlander, Camilo Villegas, Billy Horschel and Blayne Barber. Hughes had a 15 foot birdie putt to win the championship on Sunday evening while playing the 2nd playoff hole. However, darkness was setting in and this made it tough for Hughes to see the line. His attempt broke more than anticipated and he settled for a par and the group, minus Horschel, would resume the playoff on the par 3 17th hole at 8am on Monday.
As the playoff resumed under cold breezy conditions, all four players missed the green with their tee shots. Hughes, who hit his tee shot over the green, failed to get his pitch on the putting surface leaving him first to putt for par. His 18 foot downhill par putt was struck solidly and went in centre of the hole putting all the pressure on his playing partners to tie.
After Barber and Norlander missed their par attempts, Villegas had 4 feet to force another playoff hole. His putt slid by the right edge and Mackenzie Hughes became a PGA Tour winner in just his 9th start.
The win gave Hughes $1,080,000 in earnings and invitations to The Masters, The Players Championship, The PGA Championship and the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Hughes will also be a full time PGA Tour member through the 2018-19 season.
It was a great end to a season that included a win on the Web.com Tour and getting married just weeks prior to his victory in Georgia.
